The Municipality of Neebing is partnering again with Ottawa based company, Food Cycle Science to pilot an on-site food waste diversion solution that will reduce the amount of organics headed to the landfills.
Neebing will provide 12 FoodCycler machines at a subsidized price specifically for Neebing Residents to use in their homes. Participants will be required to record the amount of times they use the FoodCycler over a 12 week period which will track the amount of food waste being diverted to our landfill sites providing us with an estimate on the total impact of the pilot program.
There are two sizes of FoodCycler to choose from:
2.5L FoodCycler: The cost to Neebing Residents will be $150 which compares favourably to a retail price of $500 per unit. This unit is perfect for a one or two person household.
5.0L FoodCycler: The cost to Neebing Residents will be $300 which compares favourably to a retail price of $815 per unit. This unit is twice the size of the original and would be perfect for a family.
The reduction in cost is due to municipal discounts from Food Cycle Science, a federal investment from Impact Canada, and subsidization by the Municipality of Neebing.
What is the purpose of this program? |
The purpose of the FoodCycler™ pilot project is to measure the viability of on-site food waste processing technology as a method of waste diversion. By reducing food waste at home, you can support our community’s environmental goals, reduce your household’s carbon footprint, and extend the life of our local landfill sites. |
Who is Food Science Corporation? |
Food Cycle Science Corporation is a Canadian company based out of Ottawa, Ontario and was founded in 2011. They are also semi-finalists in the Government of Canada’s Food Waste Reduction Challenge run by Impact Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for their project “Residential On-Site Food Waste Diversion for Northern, Rural, and Remote Communities.” |
What is the Impact Canada Food Waste Reduction Challenge? |
The Food Waste Reduction Challenge includes four targeted innovation streams to accelerate and advance the deployment of diverse and high-impact solutions in Canada. |
How does it work? |
The folks at Food Cycle Science have a great information page about how the FoodCycler works or you can check out the Operating Manual. |
Why is the Municipality partnering in this trial program? |
This is an initiative to address organic waste diversion in our community. This trial program will evaluate the use of FoodCycler as a way of reducing the amount of organic waste going to the landfills and reducing the amount of food waste in our community. This will in turn extend the life of the landfill sites and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. |
What do I need to do if I am selected as a program participant? |
You will need to track how often you run the FoodCycler (i.e. how many cycles) for a period of 12 weeks (the trial period). During this time you can use the unit as much or as little as you need or want. You will be provided with a simple tracking sheet when you receive your unit. At the end of trial period, you will be asked to complete a quick survey. The survey shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes of your time and will be comprised mostly of multiple choice questions related to your experience using the FoodCycler and your waste management practices. |
How much will it cost? |
The cost for Neebing residents to purchase a unit through this trial program depends on the size of the unit you wish to purchase: 2.5L units are $150 and the 5.0L units are $300. |
What happens to my FoodCycler after the 12 week trial period? |
You own your FoodCycler and are welcome to do whatever you like with the unit after the 12 week trial. We hope that you will continue to use it to divert food waste going to our landfills. |
How do I get one? |
Enrollment for the FoodCycler Pilot Project will begin September 15-2023. Registration will be online through this page when the program opens. The units will be offered on a 'first come first served' basis only to residents of Neebing. Click on the 'FoodCycler Registration Form' link below to get started. |
