Lakehead OPP Detachment Board

The Lakehead OPP Detachment Board represents communities within the Thunder Bay OPP Detachment Area

The Board is made up of one elected official from each of the following seven (7) communities, as well as three (3) Provincial representatives and three (3) community representatives;

Responsibilities of the Board:

  • consult with the Commissioner regarding the selection of a detachment commander and otherwise participate, in accordance with the regulations made by the Minister, in the selection of the detachment commander;
  • determine objectives and priorities for the detachment, not inconsistent with the strategic plan prepared by the Minister, after consultation with the detachment commander or his or her designate;
  • advise the detachment commander with respect to policing provided by the detachment;
  • monitor the performance of the detachment commander;
  • review the reports from the detachment commander regarding policing provided by the detachment; and
  • on or before June 30th in each year, provide an annual report to the municipalities and band councils regarding the policing provided by the detachment in their communities.

Become a member of the Board

The Province is recruiting two (2) individuals to sit as the Provincial Representatives on the Board 

The Provincial Representative position is an opportunity for interested residents to participate in setting objectives and priorities for the Thunder Bay OPP Detachment to enhance the quality of life and ensure the safety and security of all persons and property in the detachment.

Eligibility:

The following are ineligible from being members of the Board:

  1. A judge or justice of the peace.
  2. A member of a police service, a special constable, or a First Nation Officer.
  3. Any person who practices criminal law as a defense counsel or as a prosecutor.
  4. A director, officer or employee of a prescribed policing provider.
  5. A former member of the OPP Detachment, unless at least one year has passed since the person ceased to be a member of the police service.
Expectations and Compensation:

Board members are expected to complete mandatory training as per the Community Safety and Policing Act, adhere to the Code of Conduct for OPP Detachment Board Members and attend meetings as determined by the Board with no fewer than four meetings each year.

Members will serve for the remainder of the 2022-2026 term of Council and will be compensated for the meeting attendance at a rate determined by the Board.

If successful, the applicant must provide a satisfactory police record check with no criminal history prior to confirmation of any appointment to the Board.
