MEDIA RELEASE - Emergency Declared in Neebing

Emergency Declared in Neebing to Ensure Safety Following Culvert Damage on Sturgeon Bay Road

Neebing, Ontario – April 26, 2026

The Municipality of Neebing has declared a local emergency as a precautionary measure after damage was identified to a culvert on Sturgeon Bay Road. This declaration allows the municipality to act proactively and ensure the safety and well‑being of residents.

Mayor Mark Thibert issued the emergency declaration on April 26, 2026, under Ontario’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act. The decision follows confirmation of a structural failure in a culvert located approximately 350 metres west of the Mink Mountain Drive intersection, which could worsen without warning.

While the road currently remains open, officials are preparing for the possibility that Sturgeon Bay Road may need to be closed if conditions change. This roadway is the only access route in and out of the area, and there is no alternate route available. A closure could temporarily isolate residents and affect access for emergency services, including ambulance, fire response, and evacuation if required.

The emergency affects residents and properties on:

  • Sturgeon Bay Road
  • Mink Mountain Drive
  • Island Avenue
  • Margaret Street (North and South)

Municipal staff and emergency partners are actively monitoring the area and coordinating next steps to manage the situation and reduce risk. This includes planning for traffic control, maintaining emergency access, and preparing additional protective measures if needed.

Residents in the affected area are encouraged to:

  • Limit non‑essential travel near the site
  • Follow all posted signage, barricades, and instructions
  • Stay informed by monitoring updates from the Municipality of Neebing

The Municipality understands this situation may be concerning and remains committed to keeping residents informed and supported as work continues. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
