Landfill Hours are Changing August 1, 2026
Earlier this year, the Municipality of Neebing conducted a public consultation process to gather input on landfill operating hours. Between March 19 and May 5, 2026, a total of 275 survey responses were received. Results indicated that a strong majority of respondents (75.6%) were satisfied with the current schedule, while also identifying important priorities for any future changes, including maintaining midweek access, preserving convenient weekend availability, and addressing concerns related to garbage storage and wildlife attraction.
Based on this feedback, a revised schedule was proposed that would better balance accessibility for residents with operational and safety considerations. A second round of consultation was then conducted on the updated proposal, resulting in 50 additional responses that provided more detailed input on how specific changes would affect households.
This additional feedback highlighted that while some residents supported the revised schedule, a number of respondents raised concerns regarding weekday winter hours and reduced weekend access at individual sites. A majority of the comments received in this phase expressed challenges with how the proposed hours would function in practice.
Taken together, both rounds of consultation respondents emphasized the need for:
- weekday access that is practical for working households;
- consistent and reliable weekend availability; and
- a balanced schedule that minimizes long gaps between operating days.
At the same time, the Municipality must consider operational realities, including staffing requirements and seasonal limitations. In particular, winter hours must be scheduled during daylight due to the absence of lighting and power at landfill sites, which limits the feasibility of evening access.
After carefully reviewing all feedback, Council approved a revised landfill schedule designed to strike a balance between these competing priorities. The approved approach:
- maintains the same total number of weekly operating hours as the current system;
- preserves 9:00 a.m. weekend openings;
- spreads access across four days between the two sites to improve overall availability;
- provides continued weekday access while aligning winter hours with daylight conditions for safety; and
- supports efficient staffing and long-term operational sustainability.
While no single schedule can meet every resident’s needs, the approved changes reflect the most consistent themes identified through public consultation and aim to provide a practical, flexible, and sustainable level of service for the community.
